NYSEARCH Collaboration with Skipper NDT Secures PHMSA Funding
NYSEARCH collaboration with Skipper NDT Secures PHMSA Funding, Marking Significant Advancement in Pipeline Inspection Technology
NYSEARCH has been collaborating with Skipper NDT to develop and test an above-ground, self-contained measurement system designed to remotely detect stress, strain, and anomalies in transmission pipelines. Skipper NDT currently utilizes technology to measure the earth's magnetic field along the pipeline for geolocation mapping. Over the past two years, NYSEARCH has been working closely with Skipper NDT to enhance surface-remote inspection services, specifically for corrosion detection.
In a recent milestone, NYSEARCH applied for and successfully secured co-funding from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) through their latest Research Announcement. This funding supports the development of advanced technologies for in-field evaluation of strain demands. We are pleased to announce that with PHMSA’s support, work will begin immediately, with a field-ready prototype expected within 18 months, slated for testing at NYSEARCH co-funder locations.
In response to PHMSA's award, NYSEARCH Senior Project Manager and Project Technical Coordinator Suzy Chaillou expressed her enthusiasm: “I am excited to continue developing this technology with Skipper NDT and to have the backing of PHMSA. Their support not only validates the credibility of our project but also underscores our commitment to pipeline safety and integrity. This innovation will enhance operational safety by minimizing the need for excavations while improving our ability to analyze data for identifying areas of pipeline deterioration.”
Mark Gunsalus, Vice President RD&D for NYSEARCH and Team Project Manager said, “I am excited for our members and the industry to have been awarded critical funding to advance this technology which will improve safety for our pipeline infrastructure. In addition, this technology allows for identification of potential pipeline anomalies without the need to excavate. A much more efficient way to operate for the future.”
The collaboration between NYSEARCH and Skipper NDT marks a significant advancement in pipeline inspection technology. By integrating cutting-edge measurement systems and securing support from PHMSA, this initiative focuses on enhancing the safety and efficiency in pipeline inspections. As the project progresses towards the prototype stage, stakeholders can look forward to a more reliable and less invasive method of monitoring pipeline integrity. This partnership exemplifies a proactive approach to maintaining the safety of our critical infrastructure while maintaining environmental impact, paving the way for a more sustainable future in pipeline management.
