NGA Public Awareness Committee Celebrates Strong Spring Campaign Results
The Northeast Gas Association’s Public Awareness Committee gathered on August 13 in Albany, NY, to review the outstanding results of the 2025 Spring Public Awareness Campaign. More than 50 committee members and presenters participated in the hybrid meeting, which featured important presentations, data reviews, and forward-looking discussions.
Campaign Overview & Survey Results
The Spring Public Awareness Campaign, developed in partnership with IDEAS Agency, ran from April 1 to May 31. Following the campaign, Great Blue Research conducted a survey from June 9 to July 11, collecting feedback from more than 1,300 respondents across our region.
Key findings included:
- High awareness of pipeline presence: More than 8 in 10 respondents remain aware of underground natural gas pipelines in their community, and 7 in 10 could specifically confirm pipelines running through their town—a more than 4% increase from 2024 levels.
- Public knowledge of gas leak safety remains strong: Respondents continue to recognize the smell of natural gas and say they would call 911 if they suspected a leak.
- Overall safety awareness is improving: Awareness of natural gas safety information improved by 3.5% compared to 2024. Significant gains were seen among the 36–55 age group (+17.1%) and 18–35 year olds (+5.3%).
Committee Discussions & Next Steps
In addition to celebrating the campaign’s success, the committee heard updates on the ongoing four-year effectiveness study, natural gas detector (NGD) deployment and messaging, and planning for the 2026 Spring Campaign. Other key public awareness initiatives were also discussed, ensuring continued progress toward our safety and outreach goals.
The strong results from this year’s campaign demonstrate the value of consistent, targeted communication with the public—and the importance of collaboration across our member organizations.
