Kicking Off The Spring Public Awareness Campaign
NGA Members Launch Spring Public Awareness Campaign
As the warmer months arrive and outdoor projects ramp up, the Northeast Gas Association (NGA) and our members, in coordination with our Public Awareness Committee, are proud to kick off the annual Spring Natural Gas Safety Public Awareness Campaign, focused on promoting natural gas safety across our region.
This year’s campaign reinforces two of the most important safety messages for homeowners, contractors, and anyone working near underground utilities:
Call 811 Before You Dig
Whether you're planting a tree, installing a fence, or breaking ground on a major construction project, it's critical to contact 811 at least a few days beforehand. This free service ensures underground utility lines are properly marked, helping to prevent dangerous and costly damage.
If You Smell Gas, Act Fast
If you ever suspect a gas leak:
-
Leave the area immediately
-
Call 911 and your local gas utility from a safe location
These simple steps can save lives.
As part of the campaign, NGA and our member utilities are rolling out a series of public service announcements (PSAs), social media graphics, and outreach materials designed to educate and engage the public.

New This Year: Promoting Natural Gas Detectors
In addition to our core safety messaging, the 2025 campaign includes information about Natural Gas Detectors—devices that can offer an extra layer of protection in homes and businesses by alerting occupants to the presence of natural gas.
We’re proud to work with our utility partners across the Northeast to share these important messages and keep our communities safe. Stay tuned throughout the spring for more updates and safety tips!
P.S. -- did you miss our spring operations conference? Bob Wilson and Marc Heustis hosted an exciting Tech Chat discussing Fuel Gas Detectors. You can learn more about this important technology at our Natural Gas Detectors page
