New federally funded project will enhance safety, reliability, and environmental performance
On May 5, Westfield Gas + Electric (WG+E) officially broke ground on an accelerated program to replace Cast Iron Pipe in Westfield Massachusetts—a major infrastructure initiative that will replace nearly 22 miles of aging cast iron gas main and upgrade 1,200 low-pressure residential services across Westfield.
The project is supported by a $17 million federal grant from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Construction will continue into 2027, with no financial impact to WG+E ratepayers. WG+E is partnering with RH White to complete the work, helping ensure a safe, efficient, and professional execution of the project.
The event brought together an exciting group of stakeholders, including Westfield Mayor Michael McCabe, representatives from PHMSA, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Their presence underscored the importance of this project to the city, the Commonwealth, and the broader energy infrastructure landscape.
The Northeast Gas Association was honored to be in attendance, with Alana Daly representing NGA and offering support on behalf of our members. We thank WG+E for the kind invitation and commend them for their leadership in advancing safety and sustainability in the region.
